1 Day Akagera National Park takes you to have a game drive safari in Rwanda’s only wildlife park. Akagera National park is located in the Eastern part of Rwanda a distance of about 2-2.5 hours of the driving. The park is named after the Akagera River that flows along its eastern boundary and feeds into a labyrinth of lakes of which the largest is Lake Ihema.
With forest-fringed lakes, papyrus swamps, savannah plains, and rolling highlands, Akagera national park is undoubtedly amongst the most scenic national parks anywhere in Africa. The park is gifted with exceptional levels of biodiversity making it the largest protected wetland in central and East Africa.
Exciting boat trips can be enjoyed on Lake Ihema which is located in the south of the Akagera National Park in the savannah region of the Eastern province of Rwanda. It is the biggest lake in the park, it covers an area of about 90 square kilometers, with a depth varying from 5 to 7 meters depending on the area and the season. The eastern lakeshore forms the border between Rwanda and Tanzania.
The lake is home to water lovers like hippopotamus and crocodiles. As for birds, it has 550 species including unique species such as shoebill (Balaeniceps rex) and the Papyrus Gonolek (laniarius mufumbiri) Among the endemic species, there are the lbis (threskiornithiae), Janacas, herons, plovers (Charadriidae), sandpipers, Malachite Kingfisher (Alcedo cristata), Hawk and many others. The lake is also a bird scantuary for bird lovers to do birdwatching from.
1 Day Akagera National Park Itinerary
A will pick you up from the airport or your hotel / residence in Kigali.
Early morning, you will be picked up at 5: 30 am by a driver guide from Access Car Rentals to transfer you for the 1 Day Akagera national park safari. The drive to Akagera National park is a 2 and half hours journey. On arrival, you will register with the park management and then start your 5 hours game drive safari with the joy of seeing great wildlife safari mammals including the Elephants, Zebras, Giraffes, Buffaloes, Lions, leopard and the recently introduced lions.
You will have your lunch within the designated picnic areas in the park and later return to Kigali.
